Transformation of a courtyard in Poznań

/

Poznan, Poland, 2025-

A project to decontaminate and revegetate a historic 19th-century courtyard – ecological revitalization of the urban space

Status: under construction

A wide green belt was designed along the main axis of the courtyard, partially functioning as a rain garden. The central element of the design is a meandering basin lined with natural stone, allowing for local stormwater retention. The drainage system is supplemented with emergency drains connected to the municipal storm sewer system, ensuring the space functions efficiently both during droughts and heavy rainfall.
The newly created green areas feature lush plantings, an automatic irrigation system, and ambient lighting to create a welcoming atmosphere after dark. The courtyard is equipped with small-scale architecture elements, including benches, wastebaskets, and an orderly pedestrian zone. The main green belt is intersected by paths leading to the entrances of individual buildings, while maintaining car access to each stairwell.
The project also included the construction of a covered bicycle and garbage can shelter, supported by a lightweight steel structure. Its form was designed to allow for the cultivation of climbing plants, and an extensive green roof was constructed over the garbage area, increasing water retention and improving the microclimate of the yard.
